Types of thongs and their functions: which one should you choose?

We know there is a wide variety of undies, but we never quite know what the differences are. Choosing the brief style that best suits you and each occasion is super important for feeling comfortable.

Lingerie is a universe waiting to be discovered, offering a wide variety of styles, patterns and shapes. Let's start by talking about thong briefs, their types and functions.

WHAT IS A THONG?

A thong is a type of brief whose main function is to remain invisible under trousers or a tight-fitting skirt. Unlike other undies, its cut does not cover the entire back.

TYPES OF THONGS

Here we explain the different types of thongs, when they should be worn and which garments to pair them with. Thongs are made for women who find underwear uncomfortable, helping them feel "as if they were wearing nothing".

TRADITIONAL OR CLASSIC THONG

This type of thong completely covers the front of the vagina, while at the back it has a wide strip from the centre that gradually narrows as it disappears between the buttocks.

**A friend's advice: Pair with loose-fitting dresses and boyfriend jeans

STRING THONG

A string thong is one that has an elastic strip at the back (like a string) that fits completely between the buttocks. It is a strip that runs from the front of the hips to the back string. Once it's on, it may look as if you're wearing nothing at the back, as it disappears between the buttocks.

**A friend's advice: Pair with figure-hugging dresses, maxi dresses and skinny jeans

BRAZILIAN BRIEFS

This type of thong is considered a brief because it provides quite a lot of coverage at the back, but if it is made from microfiber or a fine fabric, it should not show through. It covers the upper part of the buttocks, leaving the lower part exposed as it narrows into a V shape.

**A friend's advice: Pair with wide-leg trousers, activewear and denim skirts

ACCORDING TO THEIR SHAPE

Besides these three types, thongs can also be classified by letter according to their shape: T, V, G and C.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT THONG
AND WHEN TO WEAR IT

  •
  • Don't buy a thong one size smaller than your usual size or one that feels too tight.
Besides being extremely uncomfortable, it will dig into the sides of your hips, which can be unflattering for some people.
  •
  • Wear high-waisted thongs: they will make your underwear less visible, as they do not “cut your hips in two”.
  • Try wearing cotton thongs: especially if you are prone to infections, cotton is the fabric that best prevents the spread of bacteria.
  •
  • If this is your first time wearing a thong, you will find the Brazilian style the most comfortable: this style is the midway point between briefs and a thong, as it offers the best of both worlds; it prevents visible panty lines like a thong while providing the comfort of briefs, giving you the feeling of being covered. In any case, you will get used to it eventually. Wearing a thong is like drinking coffee: it tastes bitter at first, but then you cannot live without it.
  •
  • Avoid wearing thongs every day: briefs will always provide more protection against germs and help prevent urinary tract infections and yeast infections.
  •
  • Wear a thong when you want to avoid visible panty lines: Although some briefs are made from very thin fabric, their outline can often still be seen, which can look unattractive. That is why, when wearing dresses, skirts or tight-fitting trousers, it is preferable to wear a thong, as it disappears between the buttocks and makes it look as though you are wearing nothing.
