Yoga mats: how to choose your perfect mat

We all agree that it is better to run with your own shoes or play tennis with your own racket, because they are accessories that you have chosen and that adapt to your body and your needs and because, although some do not give it importance, it is more hygienic.

These factors should also apply to the mat we use for exercises and practices like yoga. It is worth investing in your own (and quality) mat, as your practice will improve considerably.

That said, not everyone knows what to look for in a good purchase, but that's what we're here for. These are the criteria you should observe when buying your mat:

Thickness

You must take into account the thickness of the mat according to the functionality that you are going to give it and your needs or tastes.

fine mat

Between 1.5mm and 2.5mm. These are usually purchased by the most travelers, since the space they can occupy in the suitcase is very scarce. They do not offer much support, especially on impacts, so we do not recommend daily use of them. However, if you prefer to feel more contact with the ground for greater stability, this would be the option for you.

medium thickness mat

Between 3mm and 4mm. This is the standard mat, as it is neither too thick nor too flat. It is usually used for light exercises such asyoga. This is the one we recommend the most for those who are just starting out or those who do not have any preference or need. Black Limba mats are found in this range.

thick mat

Between 4.5mm and 6mm. This mat is created tomore dynamic exercises like vinyasa or ashtanga yoga, in which there are jumps that need cushioning. It is also recommended for those who have sensitive joints and need a more cushioned support. It is important to know that inbalance postures, this thickness cancompromise thestability, so it is advisable to get off the mat.

Texture

By texture we mean the feel of the mat material. Depending on your taste, you can choose a rough or smoother touch, but what should never be lacking is adherence, that is, it should beanti-slip. The lack of adhesion is not only uncomfortable, because it is not at all pleasant to perform a position and feel how your hands and feet slip, but it can also be dangerous since to hold the position you are applying greater tension to the muscles. . At Black Limba we have taken great care of this factor.

Size

A standard mat usually measures approximately 175 x 60cm, but its size does not usually influence the practice of the exercise, it simply provides greater or lesser comfort. The most important thing is that you can stretch on it; A trick to know if that mat is a good size for you is to do the plank and confirm that your hands and feet are within its perimeter. More and more different models are coming out, for example, the Black Limba mats have measures of 185 x 65cm, it is always better to have too much than to fall short!

Price

In the world of yogis there is always talk of considering the purchase of the mat as an investment, since a good quality mat will last longer. And before, at least, that was true, but nowadays it is not necessary to spend 100on a good mat, since there are endless quality options with affordable prices. For example, at Black Limba we offer a price of 35€, very aligned with the quality of the product.

Material

When the image of a mat comes to mind, we usually imagine the typical plastic mat, but there are many better options, such as those made of TPE, raffia, rubber, etc. At Black Limba we choose and recommend mats whose material is TPE, since it is not only ecological and sustainable, but also has much more adherence. It is important to add that the latter have a different maintenance than the classic ones:

Cleaning and maintenance

Some brands use as a benefit of their mats that they can be put in the washing machine. From my own experience, this method is useful the first few times, but it ends up wearing down the texture and sometimes even peeling the material from the mat itself. To clean and maintain Black Limba mats, we recommend using a damp cloth or sponge with neutral soap and warm water. Later, let it dry in the open air and do not expose it to direct sunlight. Easy and simple!

Another piece of advice we offer is that if the exercise you are going to do is yoga, avoid foam mats, as they do not have enough density. You can identify this if you support your hand and leave a mark on the mat. However, if what you want to practice is pilates or gymnastics, the foam one can be a good option for you, because they are very comfortable.

Design

The design of the mat is usually only the wrapping of the tool, so it has never been the most important thing, but it can contain details that add considerably to the practice. For example, Black Limba mats have guide linesto help you with the alignment of your body in the exercise.

If, in addition, the design is beautiful, you like it and it can match your looks, it is always appreciated. We present ournew collection of accessoriesamong which are some fantastic mats!
